Soon it will also be one of the phones available with a choice of the Android-based LineageOS or Linux-based Ubuntu Touch operating systems.
The makers of the phone have launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for the F x tec Pro1-Xa slightly updated version of the phone that has the same basic design but with a a blue case, an optional spec bump more memory and storageand new OS options. For the most part, this is physically the same phone as the original F x tec Pro1.
While the original F x tec Pro1 shipped with a custom version of Android featuring a launcher optimized for either portrait or landscape orientation, the company says it partnered with xda-developers on the new version to offer LineageOS or Ubuntu Touch. This appears to have been a real longstanding problem with ubports and related to using Mir instead of X or Wayland. Or you could completely gut the ubuntu touch installation and try to use phosh, which will let much more desktop software work on your phone. Or use a linux container on sailfish.
People who use phones with physical keyboards consider an onscreen keyboard to be inferior, no matter the size. I suppose they came to an understanding that the people who would buy something like this might tend to have a problem with google, or maybe they just figured Lineage was easier to maintain. Thank you for the heads up.If you're desperate for a keyboard on a smartphone, your choices in are limited and the F x tec Pro1 already looks like it will be one of the better options for you. Looking for a phone with a physical keyboard? It's unlikely you've been able to find much recently, but the new F x tec Pro1 may be that handset. F x tec may have an odd name, but the year-old start-up company has a clear mission: to bring physical keyboards back to phones.
The Pro1 is the company's first attempt. It comes with a slide-out keyboard, and that's paired with a variety of specs that you'd expect from a phone in And while it looks remarkably different to handsets like the BlackBerry Key2it's trying to do a similar kind of thing. Those keen to pick up the Pro1 quickly will be able to pre-order the handset now from fxtec. That should ensure you get the phone in mid-September, while others will have to wait for the full release at some stage in October.
The F x tec Pro1 comes with a slide-out keyboard below the main body of the phone.
Hands on: F(x)tec Pro1 review
This snaps into place when you push the screen upward when holding the Pro1 in landscape. It's a full QWERTY keyboard that will make you think of old BlackBerry handsets, and it allows you to type out manually without having to use an on-screen keyboard. You can even set shortcuts on each of the keys, so if you're not satisfied with a touchscreen keyboard this may be a suitable way for you to type.
We found it a little difficult to get used to in our testing time, but after a few minutes of typing on the keyboard it became easier and it's likely to be something you can learn with ease just by using the phone.
The phone itself features a 5. It looks bright and vibrant enough from our limited testing time, and it looks much like what you'd expect on a modern smartphone.
Some may be disappointed that this doesn't offer a QHD resolution, but it's unlikely you'll need this on your phone.
The phone itself is quite thick given that the slide-out keyboard is sat below, but that's a trade you make to get access to that fairly unique feature. When in keyboard mode, the Pro1 sits at a degree angle. That means the keyboard can act as a stand if you want to be able to watch movies on your phone. It's a great way to prop up your handset without balancing it on items in front of you during your commute. The F x tec Pro1 comes with Android 9 software on board, and we'd expect it to be upgraded to Android 10 in the future, although the company wouldn't confirm if that would be the case.
The software was easy to use in our testing, and we liked the way it looked on the display.
F(x)tec Pro1-X is a phone that ships with Linux or Android (and has a keyboard)
Under the hood there's a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, which may be considered outdated by some phone fans. Despite being over two years old, it's still a strong chipset though and should offer some impressive day to day performance. If you need more, there's also microSD support. For a second act, the company is teaming up with XDA Developersa community of mobile software developers, to release the Pro1-X. By creating a follow-up that can run three different operating systems out of the box, including LineageOS.
It came out of the ashes of Cyanogen. Both projects have their roots in the XDA community. You have to go back to a phone like the OnePlus One to find a device that shipped with a community-based version of Android. The former, as the name suggests, is the mobile version of the Ubuntu Linux distribution. For taking photos, you a dual rear camera array made up of and 5-megapixel sensors, as well as an 8-megapixel selfie shooter. But no who wants to purchase this phone is buying it for its internal specs.

These preferences faded over time, and phones with keys largely died out. Still, some die-hards remain and it is those folks Fxtec is targeting with the Pro1. The Fxtec Pro1 features a full-sized screen and a physical keyboard that hides behind the screen when not in use. When opened and set on a table, it resembles a mini laptop and is clearly meant for those seeking to be productive. Can this small company convince people to come back to the keyboard?
The first real smartphones from the likes of BlackBerry and Palm featured tiny keyboards for typing. I happily poked at my BlackBerry and Palm Treo back in the day. Many millions of mobile professionals cut their teeth on these devices, often supplied by work, and were the first real wave of smartphone users.
Keyboard-equipped phones lost to big-screened devices for a reason: people prefer phones with large displays. Have you see the size of the screen on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus? Still, some of those early original smartphone adopters miss the keyboard, which they felt provided a better experience for composing emails on a screen. The phone has two halves that rest upon one another: the screen up top and the keyboard underneath.
Rather than simply slide back and forth, the Pro1 has a hinge that tilts the screen up at an angle. The phone it most closely resembles is the era Nokia E97, which, says Fxtec, actually inspired the hinge design. See also: Best smartphones with keyboards. As far as basic features are concerned, the Pro1 might surprise you. The screen measures 5. It is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.
F(x)tec Pro 1 is a Communicator-style touchscreen slider
The size and resolution are fine, it offers plenty of light, and the colors are accurate. Outdoor visibility is good enough. The Pro1 is comparable to other phones with 6-inch screens, at least in terms of length and width. Its 14mm depth, however, makes it chunky. The front may be glass, but Fxtec had no choice but to use lots of metal in the sliding hinge mechanism and the bottom half of the phone. At Fxtec smoothed over the profile of the phone, giving it curved side edges including the display and rounded corners.
This absolutely necessary design decision helps reduce the overall footprint to a more pocketable size. The rear metal has a matte black finish with a pleasing grain. Three buttons are on the right edge of the phone, including a volume toggle, power button, and camera key.
I am not a fan of the buttons, which make loud clacky sounds when pressed. The volume toggle is loose and floats a bit, while the camera button hardly moves at all. A fingerprint reader is mounted on the right edge, too. I found it easy to train, but it hardly ever worked properly.
I gave up and resorted to a password. I appreciate that the SIM tray can be removed with just your fingernail. I like and appreciate the basic concept here, but the execution is simply not there.
The foremost problem is the hinge. The physical act of forcing the top half to open is maddening. And now, we have been introduced to the F x tec Pro 1. But there is a niche market for devices like this, and it is good to see someone address that market. Looking at it from the front when closed up, you could mistake it for a Samsung Galaxy S9. And it is quite usable in that form. You can then switch to QWERTY mode and have the display sit at an angle while you make use of the full hardware keyboard.
The OS has been optimised for landscape use in some apps, so the layout is presented in a highly efficient way. This landscape optimisation is present in the Homescreen, email and calendar apps. Nokia was to later dumb the UI down when it ditched S80 for Series One small niggle with the F x tec Pro 1 is that it uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, which is about two years old now.
It still provides great performance but I imagine that many people will be more open to parting with N, for a device that uses SD or SD Meanwhile, have you noticed that the companies coming up with Communicator-style smartphones are predominantly based in Europe — mostly the UK?
F x tec is a UK-based outfit too. The British have a strong nostalgia for the Communicator, it appears.
